The Australian Terrier is a small dog breed terrier type. The breed was developed in Australia, although the ancestral types of dogs of that breed is descended from Britain.
Appearance
The Australian Terrier is a small dog with paws short, weighing around approx. 6.5 kg (14 lbs) and standing about 25 cm (10 inches.) On the cross, with an average length double Shaggy hard layer which is not normally clipped. Fur is shorter on the muzzle, legs, and feet, and there is a collar around the neck. The coat colors are shades of blue or red ribbon with a lighter color, and with marks on the face, ears, body and legs of a color described in the breed standard as such, not sand. The tail was traditionally docked. As with most breeds of dogs for company, all proportions and aspects of body and head, as well as colors and markings are well described in standard of race.
History
The Australian Terrier is a descendant of the kind of hard-coated terriers brought from Great Britain to Australia in early 1800. The ancestral type of all these races were held at the eradication of rats and mice. The Australian Terrier shares ancestors with the Cairn Terrier, Skye Terrier Shorthair, and the Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Irish Terriers and Yorkshire Terriers crossed in dogs during development of the breed.
Development the race began in Tasmania in 1820, and the dogs at first called the Rough Coated Terrier. The breed was officially recognized with the founding of the first breed club in 1887, and the breed was recognized as the Terriers in Australia in 1892. The Terrier of Australia is shown in a dog show for the first time in 1903 in Melbourne, and is also shown in Great Britain at the same time. The Kennel Club (UK) recognized the breed in 1933. The American Kennel Club recognized the Terrier of Australia in 1960, the United Kennel Club (USA) in 1969. It is now recognized by all major kennel clubs in the English-speaking world, and also is listed by various kennel clubs minor and other clubs and registries.
